Miniatum by Kolner is a specialized, water-based gilding system developed to create a mirror-like, high-gloss gold leaf finish without the intensive preparation required for traditional water gilding. It allows artists and craftspeople to achieve exceptional brilliance and clarity using a simplified, contemporary process.
Unlike classical water gilding—which requires gesso, clay bole, extensive surface preparation, and precise burnishing—Miniatum offers a streamlined alternative that significantly reduces labor while still delivering a refined, reflective surface. This makes it an ideal choice for fine art, manuscript illumination, decorative detailing, and professional studio work where efficiency and consistency are essential.
Miniatum also serves as a high-performance alternative to conventional water-based sizes such as Aquasize, as well as oil-based adhesive solutions like Dux oil size. Kolner Miniatum is a unique gilding size that is ideal for gilding gold leaf on paper, degreased vellum, leather, illuminated manuscripts and other flexible surfaces like foil or plastic.
Miniatum is known for it’s elasticity and long-lasting gilded surface. When turning illuminated pages the Miniatum size stays flexible and will not cause the leaf to delaminate. Miniatum size gives you a very bright gilding surface that is almost equal to burnishing with a stone burnisher. Acid free, heavy weight paper is preferred and the smoother the surface of the paper, the better the glass-like finish.

You can apply the Miniatum size with a brush or a drawing pen. When the size has set, you can apply the gold leaf. Transfer leaf works best. Volume: 50ml.

Miniatum Ink
Gilding Size
Ideal for Gilding on paper - apply using a calligraphy pen, writing quill, or other ink-based drawing instruments.
Kolner Miniatum Ink is an ink-like size especially designed for gilding gold on to paper or vellum. This adhesive is wonderful for all calligraphy, and can be applied using a calligraphy pen, writing quill, or other ink-based drawing instruments.
Miniatum Ink has permanent adhesion on an elastic film and will not break or flake on paper with normal handling. Once the size has set, the gold leaf can be applied, and a bright metal mirror-like shine can be achieved by polishing with a Kolner Tissue.

Improved Instacoll is a two part system with an unlimited open gilding time. After Instacoll Base has dried completely, apply the Activator to the area ready for gilding. Let dry and apply leaf. The ultimate mirror gloss is obtained when gilding on a completely smooth surface with patent leaf.
