Loose and Surface Leaf - Loose leaf is packaged with each leaf set between sheets of thin rouged paper, allowing the gilder to remove one leaf at a time without disturbing the rest of the book. This is the traditional format for many professional applications and is lifted with a gilder’s tip. It offers maximum control, making it well suited to studio work, curved surfaces, and projects where traditional handling matters.
Patent and Transfer Leaf - Patent leaf, also called transfer leaf, is mounted to a tissue backing so it can be handled without a gilder’s tip. It is especially useful for flatter surfaces, exterior work, lettering, and conditions where loose leaf would be difficult to control. The tissue supports the leaf until it is pressed onto the prepared surface, making it a practical and efficient format for many decorative and production applications.
Ribbon Leaf - Ribbon leaf is produced by mounting individual leaves along a continuous strip of waxed paper with a slight overlap between sheets. The paper is then rolled onto a core, creating a convenient format for repetitive work, borders, moldings, and linear applications. Ribbon leaf is valued for speed, continuity, and ease of handling where a standard book format may be less efficient.
Powder - Gold powder is finely ground metal used where leaf is impractical or where a softer, more controlled application is needed. It is especially useful for touch-ups, repairs, restoration, conservation, illuminated work, calligraphy, icons, and Kintsugi. Available in several genuine gold karats, powder offers a flexible way to introduce real gold into detailed or highly selective areas of a project.
Gold and Silver Foil - A heavier, more durable format of gold and silver designed for high-temperature and specialty applications. Ideal for glass blowing, bead making, and kiln-based work, foil offers greater stability than standard leaf while maintaining a rich metallic finish. A reliable choice where heat, handling, or process demands exceed the limits of traditional leaf.
Tamise - Tamisé consists of small decorative leaf flakes that create a lively, shimmering surface with a more broken and scattered appearance than full sheets of leaf. It is often used for specialty finishes, decorative accents, and artistic applications where sparkle, variation, and visual texture are desired. Tamisé offers an expressive alternative to standard leaf formats while remaining easy to apply in selected areas.
Schabin - Schabin is made up of large broken pieces of metal leaf, usually in irregular shapes, giving it a distinctive hand-worked appearance. It is ideal for decorative finishes, contemporary surfaces, and projects where a fragmented or expressive metallic effect is preferred over full square leaves. Schabin is often chosen when the goal is visual texture, variation, and a less formal finish.
Schlagmetal - Schlagmetal is a bulk packaging format for imitation gold leaf, designed for efficiency in studios, workshops, schools, and large-area production work. Instead of being bound into small books, the leaf is packed in larger quantities with protective paper between groups of leaves. This makes it faster to access and more economical for repetitive decorative work where value, speed, and volume matter.
How to Choose the Right Leaf
Interior vs Exterior
The environment is one of the most important factors. Exterior work is exposed to moisture, UV, temperature changes, and pollutants, all of which can degrade most metal leaf. Genuine gold (typically 23kt or higher) does not tarnish and is the standard choice for long-term outdoor durability. Interior projects allow for more flexibility, including imitation leaf and specialty finishes that would not hold up outside.
Decorative vs Permanent
Consider whether the project is purely decorative or meant to last for decades. Metal leaf (imitation gold, aluminum, copper) is ideal for interior decorative work, cost-sensitive projects, and finishes that may be toned or aged. Genuine gold is the correct choice when permanence, prestige, authenticity, or non-tarnishing performance are required, especially in high-end or historic applications.
Beginner vs Professional
Skill level and working conditions matter. Beginners often achieve better results with transfer (patent) leaf and metal leaf due to easier handling and lower material risk. As experience grows, professionals may choose loose leaf for maximum control, genuine gold for durability, or specialty formats depending on the demands of the project and environment.
Project-Specific Selection
Each application has its own material logic. Glass gilding, exterior signage, furniture, frames, sculpture, and restoration all require different combinations of leaf type, format, and adhesive system. The best approach is to start with the surface and final effect, then select the leaf that fits the technical and visual requirements of that specific project.
Format Matters Too
Transfer Leaf
Best for ease of use, flatter surfaces, and controlled application. A strong starting point for beginners and widely used in signage and exterior work.
Transfer (patent) leaf is mounted to a thin tissue backing. The leaf stays attached until it is pressed onto the prepared surface, then the tissue is removed. This format improves handling, reduces waste, and performs reliably in conditions where loose leaf would be difficult to control.
Loose Leaf
Best for traditional techniques and maximum control. Ideal for detailed work, water gilding, and projects requiring precise placement.
Loose leaf is placed between sheets of paper and lifted using a gilder’s tip. This allows full flexibility in handling but requires more skill and a controlled environment, as the leaf is extremely delicate and easily disturbed.
Ribbon Leaf (Rolls)
Best for continuous lines, striping, and repeat patterns. Ideal for automotive work, signage borders, and long, uninterrupted applications.
Ribbon leaf is supplied in rolls, allowing you to apply a continuous strip of leaf without overlapping sheets. This format improves speed, consistency, and line quality, making it especially effective for pin striping and decorative linear accents.
