Our 23.5 karat Gold and 23.5kt Patent Gold (Transfer Leaf) contain 98% pure Gold, 1.2% Silver, and 0.8% Copper, producing an exceptionally rich, deep gold tone with outstanding brilliance and purity. This high-gold alloy is prized for traditional water gilding, fine art, and conservation work where maximum luminosity and color authenticity are essential.
We offer a selection of gram weights to accommodate different project demands and gilding techniques. Gram weight is defined as the weight of 1,000 standard 3 3/8" square leaves and is best understood as a measure of leaf density rather than thickness. Each leaf is beaten to an ultra-thin standard of approximately 0.5 microns.
Loose Gold — Loose 23.5kt Gold leaf is interleaved between sheets of thin, lightly rouged paper, allowing individual leaves to be lifted cleanly without disturbing the remainder of the book. Loose leaf is traditionally handled with a gilder’s tip (a flat natural-hair brush) and is the preferred choice for water gilding, burnished finishes, iconography, and museum-grade restoration where the highest gold content is desired.
Patent Gold (Transfer Leaf) — 23.5kt Patent Gold leaf, also known as transfer leaf, is mounted to a special tissue paper using a pressure process. Each leaf-and-tissue unit is interleaved with thin rouged paper, enabling clean, consistent single-sheet removal. Transfer leaf provides added control, making it ideal for larger areas, straight runs, smooth substrates, and applications requiring precise placement with minimal handling.
