Etched Traditional Egg Tempera for Water and Mordant Gilded Frames and Furniture
Sgraffito, Italian for ‘scratched’, is a decorative process used in gilding where design elements are etched into an egg tempera paint which is applied over a burnished water gilded surface revealing the brilliant gold leaf ground underneath..
The use of this medieval decorative approach was used on early gilded and tempera panel paintings, frames, and statuary and continues today as used as embellishment in the centuries-old tradition of finely handcrafted picture frames. Oil Gilding and Water Based Adhesive as a mordant may also be used for the gilding.
Join us for this special 1-Day Intensive Masterclass as students learn to prepare and apply traditional egg tempera from egg yolk and dry pigment over a pre-gilded panel which each student will be provided using brass leaf and the acrylic emulsion size. Water Gilding and Mordant Gilding will also be demonstrated for instruction and comparison. Students get to take home their etched Sgraffito Panel!
We will also discuss shellac as an isolating coat and varnishes as well as the use of punchwork to enhance the revealed gilded ground that can catch the light for a touch of added sparkle.
This Masterclass is open to all who wish to experience the beauty of this intriguing historical method of the gilding arts. Students with experience in gilding are free to bring their own gilded object to explore Sgraffito though not required. Those who are new to gilding will become acquainted with various gilding methods with the emphasis on the Egg Tempera Sgraffito. All are welcome!f)
