Re-gilding a frame that has an existing finish can be the perfect solution for bringing new life to the aged frame or one that has fallen under disrepair. But there are also considerations of preservation and conservation, namely, how can we preserve a gilded object and its history while also returning a state of elegance to a once beautiful picture frame that will present the artwork appropriately?
During the new 8 week class, gilding instructor Charles Douglas will guide you through the steps of simple non-toxic casting of missing ornaments, applying an isolating coat to the original finish, applying an undercoat color and oil gilding anew with 23k gold leaf. Gentle antiquing and protective coatings will also be demonstrated in this essential technique and approach for both the restorer and those with a desire to bring new life to frames of personal importance.
