Base Color Learning Center

What is bole?

This base color is also referred to as the 'Bole' color. Traditionally, bole was made from clay. Today paint is typically substituted.
One can experiment with different colors and your choice will affect the overall appearance of the finished product. For example, the traditional terra-cotta color adds warmth to both gold and silver leaf. A black 'bole' color creates a hard, cold look - often appropriate for Art Deco pieces, and the like. A yellow 'bole' color evens out the overall appearance, and diminishes any cracks or 'holidays' on the gilded surface.

Save time while producing professional results!

When using the Rolco Burnish Sealer it is not necessary to apply an additional 'bole' color over the primer sealer. This product is available in 3 colors. One can experiment with different colors and your choice will affect the overall appearance of the finished product.

Alternate bole color selections

Golden Ochre implies a rich,
golden inner glow. Ideally used under gold and copper leafed finishes.
Stem green creates a lovely softness under silver leaf. Ideal for small and unusually shaped objects requiring a contemporary appearance.

Product information

Leaf Size:

Gold leaf is 3 3/8 x 3 3/8 inches square (85 mm x 85 mm) and is sold in units called packs, containing 500 leaves. A pack is divided into 20 books with each book containing 25 leaves.

Leaf coverage

A book contains 25 leaves, a pack contains 20 books, equaling 500 leaves. Each pack of 500 leaves covers a surface area of 39.50 sq.ft. without waste or overlap. The gilder can determine the percentage of waste based on the complexity of the object and his or her own expertise in laying leaf. If for example, the surface is very ornate with deep crevices, it will require more leaf than the same size area of a flat surface.
For more information on leaf coverage visit Gilding Basics.

Karats and Alloys

Gold is alloyed with Silver, Copper and other metals to achieve a variety of colors and shades. A higher gold content and/or greater amount of copper will result in deeper tones of leaf. The higher karat leaves are also more durable due to the higher gold content. In the lower karats of leaf, such as 18kt, 16kt, and 12kt, gold is alloyed with silver or other metals to achieve lighter colors.
